Green reporting standard ’should be created for charities’

Posted in News on the May 14th, 2008

The Charity Finance Directors’ Group (CFDG) is creating a social and environmental reporting standard for those working in the third sector, it has been revealed.

Moves by the institution come after a recent study showed that just four out of the country’s top 50 charities commented on green topics during their annual reports.

Ernese Skinner, policy and campaigns manager at the CFDG, said: "We would encourage charities to look at green issues and we think this is something finance directors can take a lead on."

Ms Skinner added that the creation of such a standard follows a Charity Commission seminar asking the question whether or not environmental objectives should be incorporated into their overall aims, ThirdSector.co.uk reports.

She went on to assert that the initiative would be voluntary and aims to encourage best practice across charities.

Following on from such a standard it may be possible that third sector bodies are able to maintain sustainable efficiencies more effectively.

Last month, the Carbon Trust released guidance for charities and community groups aimed at helping them to organise their office space in such a way to reduce their impact on the environment.

More about sustainable efficiencies.
