Government announces skills programme
A multimillion pound training initiative has been unveiled by the British government.
In an attempt to tackle skills shortages, John Denham, secretary of state for innovation, universities and skills, announced that some £200 million will be invested over the next three years to finance specialist training colleges.
Mr Denham said: "We are making a lot of progress, but the fact is too much of our skills training is based on a hope that employers will train people in the skills the economy will need in the medium term."
Such news may be of interest to those operating within the public sector looking to improve the skills framework of their staff.
Figures from the government indicated that about two million workers are required in order to maintain a competitive economy between now and 2014.
Earlier this month, research carried out by the PNE Group showed that about three-quarters of third sector workers in the north-east of the country have a degree or some other kind of higher education qualification, compared to about 33 per cent of such workers on a nationwide basis.
