Involvement in charity sector ‘rises’

Increasing numbers of Britons are taking part in the third sector, a new report indicates.

A poll carried out by Ipsos Mori for the Charity Commission revealed that more than one in three (36 per cent) of people became actively involved with voluntary and charitable institutions - whether it is working for a charity, volunteering or being a trustee.

Generous pension ‘can assist’ with staff recruitment

Offering an attractive pension plan can play a useful role in the recruiting and retaining of staff, it has been suggested.

According to Mark Brooks, spokesperson for the National Association of Pension Funds (NAPF), the provision of such a financial product can help employers, which may include those operating within the third sector, to attract job applicants.

North East Derbyshire council making “significant” improvements

Those working for a council in the east Midlands are offering an improving service to their residents, it has been revealed.

In the Audit Commission’s comprehensive performance assessment (CPA), North East Derbyshire council was given an "excellent" rating.

Scheme launched to improve levels of councillors from BME backgrounds

A new initiative has been launched to improve the numbers of black and minority ethnic (BME) background women working as councillors in the public sector, it has been revealed.

In figures released by the government the proportion of such women working at councils stood at 0.9 per cent in 2006 - about 170 out of a total of 20,000 - a rise from the 0.6 per cent recorded in 1997.

Government announces skills programme

A multimillion pound training initiative has been unveiled by the British government.

In an attempt to tackle skills shortages, John Denham, secretary of state for innovation, universities and skills, announced that some £200 million will be invested over the next three years to finance specialist training colleges.
