Local authorities ‘improving council tax collection’

Posted in News on the June 20th, 2008

Those working for local councils are making better use of their finances, it has been reported.

According to John Healey, local government minister, authorities have continued to improve the amount of council tax collected for the eighth year in a row.

In addition, it was claimed that councils are on track to make efficiency savings of some £3.2 billion during the last four years.

He said: "Councils have continued to improve their council tax collection rates.

"Last year, councils collected 97.1 per cent of the collectable council tax and I congratulate them on their efforts."

Mr Healey added that such collection rates, in addition to the inaugural three-year settlement giving every council an increase in funding, have helped place those working for local government bodies in a "strong financial position".

Such news may be of interest to those leaders in the public sector looking to improve sustainable efficiencies.

In March, environment minister Phil Woolas unveiled a £4 million fund advising local councils on how best to minimise the impact their staff have on the environment.
