Art charities ’should work closer with rest of third sector’
Those working for arts charities should form closer links as network partners with other organisations involved in the third sector, it has been suggested.
According to Sydney Thornbury, chief executive of theatrical charity WebPlay, although many arts charities do not view themselves as being charitable organisations and some do not rely on volunteers, working with other voluntary groups can bring benefits.
"[Arts charities] really don’t see themselves as part of the third sector, but there’s a lot they can learn from other charities - and also a lot they can bring to the sector," she said.
Ms Thornbury also praised moves by the National Council of Voluntary Organisations to develop links with the arts sector by holding a meeting with the Voluntary Arts Network.
However, she stated that the Arts Council England should also get involved in such discussion as over 90 per cent of the council’s regularly funded organisations are charities.
In other news, recent findings from the Institute for Volunteering Research claimed that voluntary groups need more funding assistance in order to support volunteers.
