Share issues ‘underused by charities’

Posted in News on the June 26th, 2008

Those working for charities and social enterprises should make greater use of share and bond issues to help generate funds.

Such is the assertion of social enterprise the Camberwell Project which claimed that when raising money for community projects third sector bodies should launch share issues.

Project director Chris Hill said: "It’s a method I would almost universally recommend and it’s underused - there have been few share issues of more than £10,000.

"Shares allow communities to show their support and involvement in a project."

It was stated that the majority of people would be prepared to accept a low return on their money if their investment was being put towards a social good cause, ThirdSector.co.uk reports.

The director’s comments come after the project launched a share issue in Leeds to help a community to buy a school.

Such news could be of assistance to charities wishing to maintain sustainable efficiencies.

Earlier this week, Allison Ogden-Newton, chief executive of Social Enterprise London, claimed that social enterprises should "think outside the box" when looking to form new partnerships in a bid to expand the size and scale of their activities.

More about sustainable efficiencies.
