The Welsh Assembly government has strengthened its commitment to voluntary and charitable organisations in the region, it has been revealed.

At an event held in the Welsh capital of Cardiff, the Assembly government forged stronger links at network partners with the third sector following the signing of an agreement to issue funding over a period of five years.

Brian Gibbons, social justice minister, said: "We expect public bodies to recognise the third sector’s role in creating public services that really reflect people’s needs and preferences."

He added that the third sector is of particular importance as "it taps into the strong sense of community and volunteering" which is prevelant across the region.

With the document also signed by representatives from County Voluntary Councils and Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA), the agreement will see two umbrella organisations commit to ensuring charities and voluntary groups throughout the area receive infrastructural support.

In other news, the Assembly’s recently announced Communities First scheme is to offer grants to third sector groups in Wales to help improve their local area.
