Calls for European volunteering year put forward

Posted in News on the July 24th, 2008

Community Service Volunteers (CSV) has called on British MPs to back plans for a European year of volunteering, it has emerged.

The charity has urged the 78 UK members of the European parliament to support dedicating 2011 to those working in the voluntary sector.

Should this take place, it was claimed that more people across the country will be encouraged to volunteer.

Meanwhile, it was reported that the initiative would allow different countries to share information on volunteering practices and policies.

It may be possible that the establishment of a volunteering year could help those operating in the third sector to improve their skills framework.

At present 450 members of the European parliament - which includes 48 from Britain - have signed a motion to formally recognise the voluntary sector.

Dame Elisabeth Hoodless, director of CSV and president of European network Volonteurope, said: "The EU cannot afford not to care about its active citizens."

In the recently released Believing in Local Action report, it was claimed that third sector groups and faith organisations should work together.
