Charities ”likely to struggle over next ten years”

Posted in News on the March 5th, 2009

The next ten years are likely to present difficulties for those working in the third sector.

Rachel Lomax, chair of the National Council of Voluntary Organisation’’s (NCVO) Funding Commission, states that although the last decade has been "pretty golden" for charities and voluntary groups on the whole - due to an increase in income and the establishment of several new organisations - the coming years will present numerous challenges.

Speaking in an interview with ThirdSector.co.uk, the NCVO chair states that the difficulties being experienced in the financial markets could well see a number of third sector bodies struggle to say viable.

"A lot of charities don”t have much in the way of reserves, if any. That’’s fine in good times, but in bad times it might be the difference between surviving and not," in news that could interest those looking to improve their sustainable efficiencies.

The concerns being held by the charity sector were recently shown in a study by the London Voluntary Service Council, which revealed 82 per cent of third sector groups in the capital are worried about their ability to keep up with demand for services as the credit crisis continues.
